Circle Singers Member Profile

Circle Singers presents its Member Profile. Here periodically we will present some inside "scoop" on the life and times of one of our members. We hope to accomplish two things: First, to give a more human picture of the chorus by showing some of the neat people who participate; Second, to improve personal awareness within the group since we come from such disparate areas of greater Cincinnati.

Bill Smith

Bill Smith, Bass
June, 2006

One does not have to listen very closely to hear Bill Smith's strong voice resonating from the Circle Singers bass section. Bill's voice and persona have been solid beacons in local community choirs for over 10 years.

Bill's first singing experience was in a Boys Choir in Chillicothe. While he did not sing in high school, he was actively involved with his HS band and orchestra. This experience led to his three year run on the Ohio State University Marching Band. As a senior however, the demands of working toward a degree in Chemical Engineering resulted in Bill swapping out his band uniform for a less demanding tour in the Ohio State University Men’s Glee Club.

His most memorable singing experience was being part of the Bach Choir in Chillicothe for the one summer it existed. A group of college students led by a very talented student director and organist sang in different churches (from Baptist to Catholic) every Sunday as ‘Summer Choir Replacements’. On one occasion, the group even handled the whole service at a small country church that did not have a full time minister.

Bill has been very active in Circle Singers organization during his five years as a member. One year he served as the chorus president. He presently acts as the group's librarian.

Bill and spouse Barbara will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this spring. They have two grown children and four grandchildren. In 2000 Bill retired from P & G with almost 35 years service. In his “retirement” Bill can often be found enjoying his hobbies of singing, gardening and helping design and plan their new home in the Southern Indiana countryside. The home has a wonderful view and is situated where deer and wildlife share the nearby woods and fields.

After they move into their new home, Bill hopes to find and join another choir in Indiana. I know we will have to listen closely this time but by next October I suspect you will still hear Bill's strong singing voice drifting in from the west.
